प्रदोषस्तोत्राष्टकम्

श्रीगणेशाय नम: ॥

Pradosha Ashtakam or Pradoshashtakam is a revered prayer to Lord Shiva. It is chanted during Pradosh vrata or Pradosh Shiva puja.

सत्यं ब्रवीमि परलोकहितं ब्रवीमि सारम ब्रवीम्युपनिषद्ध दयं ब्रवीमि ।
संसारमुल्बणमसारमवाप्य जंतो: सारोयमीश्‍वरपदांबुरुहस्य सेवा ॥१॥

Sathyam braveemi, paraloka hitham braveemi,
Saaram braveemi upanishadyadhyam braveemi,
Samsaramuthbanamasar vaapya jantho,
Saroyameeswarapadhamburuhasya seva. 1

I tell the truth,
I tell what is good for the other world,
I tell the views of the Upanishads,
For every insignificant animal that is born,
The only meaningful thing is the service to God.

ये नार्चयंति गिरिशं समये प्रदोषे ये नार्चितं शिवमपि प्रणमंति चान्ये ।
एतत्कथां श्रुति पुटैर्न पिबंति मूढा: ते जन्मजन्मसु भवंति नरा दरिद्रा: ॥२॥

Yenarchayanthi gireesam samaye pradoshe,
Ye na architham shivamapi pranamanthichanye,
Ethath kadhaam sruthi putair na pibanthi mooda,
Stheya janma subhavanthi naraa daridra. 2

He who does not worship Lord Shiva during Pradosha,
He who does not at least bow before him at that time,
He who does not at least listen to the story of Shiva at that time,
Is a foolish soul who would be always poor, birth after birth.

ये वै प्रदोषसमये परमेश्‍वरस्य कुर्वंत्यनन्यमनसोंघ्रिसरोजपूजाम् ।
नित्यं प्रवृद्धधन धान्यकलत्रपुत्र सौभाग्यसंपदधिकास्त इहैव लोके ॥३॥

Ye vai pradosha samaye parameswarasya,
Kurvanthyananya mansangri saroja poojaam,
Nithya pravrudha thara puthra kalathra mithra,
Soubhagya sambadadhikastha ihaiva loke. 3

He who during the time of Pradosha, worships Lord Shiva,
With full concentration using lotus flowers,
Would forever along with his children, wife and friends,
Get all wealth and all luck in a very large measure.

कैलास शैलभुवने त्रिजगज्जनित्रीं गौरीं निवेश्य कनकाचितर‍नपीठे ।
नृत्यं विधातुमभिवांछति शूलपाणौ देव: प्रदोषसमये न भजंति सर्वे ॥४॥

Kailasa shaila bhuvane thri jaga janithreem,
Gowreedha nivesye kanakanchitha rathna peete,
Nrutham vidhthu mabhi vanchithi Soolapanau,
Deva Pradosha samaye anubhajanthi sarve. 4

During the time of Pradosha,
The Lord who holds the trident,
Makes Goddess Gowri,
Who is the mother of all the three worlds,
Sit on a golden seat inlaid with precious gems,
And prepares to dance himself,
And all the devas sing his praise at this time.

वाग्देवी धृतवल्लकी शतमखो वेणुं दधतपद्मजस्तालोन्निद्रकरो रमा भगवतीगेयप्रयोगान्विता ।
विष्णु: सांद्रमृदंगवादनपटुर्देवा: समंतास्थिता: सेवन्ते तमनु प्रदोषसमये देवं मृडानीपतिम् ॥५॥

Vagdevi drutha vallaakee sathamukho
venum dhadhan padmaja,
Sthallo nidhra karo ramaa bhagawathi,
geya prayogaanvithaa,
Vishnu saandra mrudanga vaadana patur
devas samanthath sthithaa,
Sevanthe thamara pradosha samaye
devam mrudaaneepathim. 5

The goddess of Knowledge plays Veena,
The hundred faced Indra plays the flute,
The Brahma who was born in a lotus keeps time,
The Goddess Lakshmi starts to sing,
The God Vishnu plays the drum with ease,
And all the devas stand all round in service,
And pray Lord Shiva during the time of pradosha.

गन्धर्वयक्षपतगोरगसिद्धसाध्य विद्याधरामरवराप्सरसां गणाश्‍च ।
येऽन्ये त्रिलोकनिलया: सहभूतवर्गा: प्राप्ते प्रदोषसमये हरपार्श्वसंस्था ॥६॥

Gandarwa Yaksha patha goraga siddha saadhya.
Vidhyadaraamaraapsaraso ganaascha,
Yeanyethi loka nilaya saha bhootha varga,
Prapthe pradosha samaye hara parswa samstha. 6

When the time of Pradosha arrives,
Gandarwas, Yakshas, birds, snakes, saints,
Vidhyadaras, devas, the celestial dancers, Bhoothas,
And all the beings in the three worlds,
Come and stand near The Lord Shiva.

 

अत: प्रदोषे शिव एक एव पूज्योऽथ नान्ये हरिपद्मजाद्या: ।
तस्मिन्महेशेन विधिनेज्यमाने सर्वे प्रसीदंति सुराधिनाथा: ॥७॥

Atha pradoshe shiva eka eva,
Poojyodhananye hari padmajadhya,
Thasmin mahese vidhinejyamane,
Sarve praseedanthi suradhi natha. 7

So at the time of Pradosha,
There is need to worship only Shiva,
Instead of Vishnu , Brahma and others,
For the proper worship of Lord Shiva then,
Would give the effect of worshipping all gods.

एष ते तनय: पूर्वजन्मनि ब्राह्मणोत्तम: । प्रतिग्रहैर्वयो निन्ये न दानाद्यै: सुकर्मभि: ॥८॥

अतो दारिद्र्यमापन्नपुत्रस्ते द्विजभामिनि । तद्दोष परिहारार्थं शरणं यातु शंकरम् ॥९॥

॥ इति श्रीस्कंदपुराणे प्रदोषस्तोत्राष्टकं सम्पूर्णम् ॥

ध्यानम्

ध्यायेन्नित्यं महेशं रजतगिरिनिभं चारुचन्द्रावतंसं
रत्नाकल्पोज्ज्वलाङ्गं परशुमृगवराभीतिहस्तं प्रसन्नम्  ।
पद्मासीनं समन्तात्स्तुतममरगणैर्व्याघ्रकृत्तिं वसानं
विश्वाद्यं विश्वबीजं निखिलभयहरं पञ्चवक्त्रं त्रिनेत्रम॥१॥

One should meditate upon Maheśa, Who is eternal, Whose complexion resembles Mount Kailāsa, Who has a beautiful moon on forehead, Whose bright organs are decorated by jewels, Who has an axe, a deer, boon and fearlessness in hands, Who is gracious, Who is sitting on a lotus, Who is continuously eulogized by the devagaṇa (demi-gods), Who has a cloth made of tiger-skin, Who is the beginning of the universe, Who is the cause of the universe, Who absolves all the fears, Who has five heads, and Who has three eyes (on every head). [1]

स्तोत्रम्

पशुपतीन्दुपतिं धरणीपतिं भुजगलोकपतिं च सती पतिम्  ।
गणत भक्तजनार्ति हरं परं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥१॥

Hey man, pray the lord of the daughter of the mountain, Who is the lord of all beings, Who is the lord of the moon, Who is the lord of the world, Who is the lord of the universe, Who is the Lord of Sathi Devi, And who destroys the sorrows of his devotees. [1]

न जनको जननी न च सोदरो न तनयो न च भूरिबलं कुलम्  ।
अवति कोऽपि न कालवशं गतं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥ २॥

Hey man, pray the lord of the daughter of the mountain, For, when you are going to the god of death, Neither father nor mother nor brother, Nor sons nor your family with many members, Can ever save you for sure. [2]

मुरजडिण्डिवाद्यविलक्षणं मधुरपञ्चमनादविशारदम्  ।
प्रथमभूत गणैरपि सेवितं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥३॥

Hey man, pray the lord of the daughter of the mountain, Who is an expert in playing small and big drums, Who is very clever in singing the panchama tune, And who is served by bhoothas like pramadha. [3]

शरणदं सुखदं शरणान्वितं शिव शिवेति शिवेति नतं नृणाम्  ।
अभयदं करुणा वरुणालयं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥४॥

Hey man, pray the lord of the daughter of the mountain, Who gives protection and pleasure to those who approach, Who is worshipped by people as Shiva, Shiva, Shiva, And who is the protector and sea of mercy. [4]

नरशिरोरचितं मणिकुण्डलं भुजगहारमुदं वृषभध्वजम्  ।
चितिरजोधवली कृत विग्रहं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥५॥

Hey man, pray the lord of the daughter of the mountain, Who decorates himself with skulls of humans, Who wears ear studs made of snakes, Who wears a garland of snakes, Who has a flag of a bull, And who is white due to applied ash from the ground of cremation. [5]

मुखविनाशङ्करं शशिशेखरं सततमघ्वरं भाजि फलप्रदम्  ।
प्रलयदग्धसुरासुरमानवं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥६॥

Hey man, pray the lord of the daughter of the mountain, Who destroyed a fire sacrifice, Who adds the moon's crescent to himself, Who always gives blessing to those who do fire sacrifices, And who burns man, devas and asuras at the time of deluge. [6]

मदम पास्य चिरं हृदि संस्थितं मरण जन्म जरा भय पीडितम्  ।

जगदुदीक्ष्य समीपभयाकुलं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥७॥

Hey man, pray the lord of the daughter of the mountain, Leaving the arrogance which is in your mind for long, Realizing that world is fully fear struck, Of death, birth and old age. [7]

हरिविरिञ्चिसुराधिंप पूजितं यमजनेशधनेशनमस्कृतम्  ।
त्रिनयनं भुवन त्रितयाधिपं भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥८॥

Hey man, pray the lord of the daughter of the mountain, Who is worshipped by Vishnu, Brahma and Indra, Who is saluted by lords of death, ocean and wealth,
Who has three eyes and fearful when he nears. [8]

पशुपतेरिदमष्टकमद्भुतं विरिचित पृथिवी पति सूरिणा  ।

पठति संशृनुते मनुजः सदा शिवपुरिं वसते लभते मुदम् ॥९॥

The man who always reads or hears, This wonderful octet on the lord of all beings, Written by Soori who is the king of the world, Would reach the world of Shiva and happily live there. [9]

Which is the teacher of all the devas,

Who applies ash all over his body, Who destroys the sorrow of life, And who does not have destruction, And so what can the God of Death do to me?

मत्त्वारणमुख्यचर्मकृतोत्तरीमनोहरं
पङ्कजासनपद्मलोचनपुजिताङ्घ्रिसरोरुहम् ।
देवसिन्धुतरङ्गसीकर सिक्तशुभ्रजटाधरं
चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर रक्षमाम् ॥ ४॥

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon, Who is the stealer of minds because of his upper cloth, Made of the skin of the ferocious elephant,
Who has lotus-like feet which are worshipped, By Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu, And who has matted hair drenched by drops, Of the waves of the holy river Ganga, And so what can God of Death do to me?

यक्षराजसखं भगाक्षहरं भुजङ्गविभूषणं
शैलराजसुता परिष्कृत चारुवामकलेवरम् ।
क्ष्वेडनीलगलं परश्वधधारिणं मृगधारिणं
चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर रक्षमाम् ॥ ५॥

I seek refuge in him, who has the moon, Who is friend of Lord Kubera, Who destroyed the eyes of Bhaga, Who wears serpent as ornament, Whose left part of the body is decorated, By the daughter of the king of mountain, Whose neck is blue because of the poison, Who is armed with an axe, And who carries a deer with Him, And so what can God of Death do to me?

कुण्डलीकृतकुण्डलेश्वरकुण्डलं वृषवाहनं
नारदादिमुनीश्वरस्तुतवैभवं भुवनेश्वरम् ।
अन्धकान्धकामा श्रिता मरपादपं शमनान्तकं
चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर रक्षमाम् ॥ ६॥

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon, Who wears the ear studs made of a curling serpent, Who is the great one being praised by Narada and other sages, Who is the Lord of the entire earth, Who is the killer of Anthakasura. Who is the wish-giving tree to his devotees, And who is the killer of God of Death, And so what can God of Death do to me?

भषजं भवरोगिणामखिलापदामपहारिणं
दक्षयज्ञर्विनाशनं त्रिगुणात्मकं त्रिविलोचनम् ।
भुक्तिमुक्तफलप्रदं सकलाघसङ्घनिवर्हनं चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर रक्षमाम् ॥ ७॥

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon, Who is the doctor who cures sorrowful life,
Who destroys all sorts of dangers, Who destroyed the fire sacrifice of Daksha, Who is personification of three qualities, Who has three different eyes, Who bestows  devotion and salvation, And who destroys all types of sins, And so what can God of death do to me?

भक्त वत्सलमचिञ्तं निधिमक्षयं हरिदम्वरं
सर्वभूतपतिं परात्पर प्रमेयमनुत्तमम् ।
सोमवारिज भूहुताशनसोमपानिलखाकृतिं चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर रक्षमाम् ॥ ८॥

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon, Who is worshipped as darling of devotees, Who is the treasure which is perennial, Who clothes Himself with the directions, Who is the chief of all beings, Who is beyond the unreachable God, Who is not understood by any one, Who is the holiest of every one, And who is served by moon, water, sun, earth, Fire, ether, boss and the Wind And so what can god of death do to me?

विश्वसृष्टिविधालिनं पुनरेव पालनतत्परं
संहरन्तमपि प्रपञ्चम शेषलोकनिवासिनम् ।
क्रिडयन्तमहर्निशं गणनाथयूथ समन्वितंचन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेकर चन्द्रशेकर रक्षमाम् ॥ ९॥

I seek refuge in Him, who has the moon, Who does the creation of the universe, Who then is interested in its upkeep, Who at proper time destroys the universe, Who lives in every being of the universe, Who is plays day and night with all beings, Who is the leader of all beings, And who is like any one of them, And so what can god of death do to me?

मृत्युभीतमृकण्डसूनुकृतस्तव शिव सन्निधौ
यत्र कुत्र च पठेन्नहि तस्य मृत्युभयं भवेत् ।
पूर्णमायुररोगितामखिलाथ सम्पदमादरंचन्द्रशेखर एव तस्य ददाति मुक्तिमयत्नतः ॥ १०॥

He who reads this prayer, Composed by the son of Mrukandu, Who was fear struck with death, In the temple of Lord Shiva, Will not have fear of death, He would have full healthy life, With all grains and all wealth, And Lord Chandra Shekara, Would give Him, Salvation in the end.

॥ इति चन्द्रशेखराष्टकम् ॥
